Correct pump selection is a matter of matching your flow and pressure requirements to the appropriate pump. The pump specialist will take into account a number of factors to select the most appropriate pump for the job (suction head, delivery head, friction losses and demand pressure at the point of use, duty point of the appropriate pump).

The table below is a simple guide to select the correct pump for typical household applications. To provide a range of pricing for each application we have included three different brands of pumps. Information on these brands and when a constant pressure pump is appropriate can be found below the table.

Warning: Some pump manufactures and suppliers quote their pumps as X taps pump. In this case they usually quote a tap as being 8 l/min. In Australia a garden tap is usually at least 20l/min.

Mains Water Backup System

If you are considering connecting your water tank to your toilet or washing machine (and you are also on mains water) then we recommend our Mains Water Backup Pump System. This system will ensure that your toilet is supplied with water even if your tank is empty.

Constant pressure pumps

All the pumps in the selection table below are “constant pressure pumps”. They are fitted with an electronic controller that ensures that the pump runs constantly while there is a demand for water. The pump will start when the pressure drops in the delivery line (tap turned on). The pump will stop when the flow through the controller ceases (tap turned off or tank empty). This mode of operation has some advantages as well as disadvantages.

Advantages

• Constant water pressure - no cycling if demand is low. This is very good for household systems and also for pumps connected to irrigation systems.
• Dry run protected. Because the pump is programmed to stop when flow ceases, the pump will be protected if (when) the tank runs dry.

Disadvantages

• Constant pressure pumps will continue to run if there is as little as 2 litres per minute flow. Therefore if there are leaks in your plumbing, the pump may fail to shut down. They should not be used on houses with evaporative air conditioning systems (these systems use a continual dribble of water). In these situations it is best to incorporate an air pressure tank into the pump system. Bianco Pumpz are designed in Australia and made in China. They are supported by a large dealer/service network across all states and carry a 2 year warranty. At Wet Earth we believe Bianco pumps are at the better end of the Chinese import segment.
